Garage door installation and replacement in Los Angeles, chosen for the house it goes on

The garage door is the biggest thing on most Los Angeles frontages, so we start with the house and work back to the door. See the options on your own elevation before we measure anything.

Start with the house, not the door

On most Los Angeles frontages the garage door is the largest flat surface anyone sees from the street, more of the elevation than the front door and windows together. What matters is which door belongs on your house, at your setback, in your afternoon light, so this page is organized by the kind of house the door goes on, not by a table of material tiers.

Spanish and Mediterranean houses

Where the opening is arched, the arch is the first decision. After that a plank face with dark hardware sits better against stucco than a smooth modern panel, and the hardware matters more than the material. More on Spanish and Mediterranean garage doors.

Post-war ranch and mid-century

Wide, low openings, often sixteen feet across a flat facade. Flush faces and clean-line panels work with the horizontal lines of the house. A top row of glazing brings daylight in without a window at eye level on the street.

Craftsman, bungalow and historic districts

Carriage-house styling suits these homes. If the street sits in a historic district, read historic and carriage-style garage doors before you fall in love with a door.

Hillside and low-headroom garages

A garage cut into a slope, or tucked under the floor above, limits headroom, backroom and side room. That decides the track type and where the motor sits. See low headroom and hillside doors.

See it on your own house first

Photographs of other people's homes only take you so far. Upload a picture of your frontage at see it on your house, pick a direction, and get a preview on your own elevation. Treat it as an illustration to steer the conversation, not a specification. When one direction pulls ahead, ask for a free estimate.

Three things that catch people out

  1. California law requires a battery backup on a residential garage door opener sold or installed in the state.
  2. A door that does not back off an obstruction is unsafe whatever its age, and a new door changes the weight the opener's safety reverse was set for. More on openers.
  3. Springs on an overhead door are sized to its weight, so a new door normally means new springs.

When a repair is the better answer

A door that will not close, one that has started making noise, or an opener that runs while the door stays put is usually a repair.

Two exceptions you should not touch. A snapped torsion spring holds enough stored energy to injure you badly, and a door off its track can drop. Leave it, keep people and cars clear, and call. Both are emergency work.

How we quote it

The inspection and estimate are free whether or not you order, and that visit is when we measure the opening. Your written price holds with nothing added unless you say so, and the invoice lists the door and each part installed with it, specification included.

What affects the price explains what moves the figure up or down, and you can ask about financing. We work across Los Angeles County, and areas we cover sets out what changes from one part of it to the next. Contact has the number and the form.
