Carriage-style garage doors for Los Angeles historic districts

Some Los Angeles streets sit inside a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. The first job is finding out whether yours is one of them.

A garage door on the front of a house is an exterior change.

Check the address before you choose a door

The first step is finding out whether your address sits inside one of these zones. That answer lives in the City of Los Angeles planning records, and ZIMAS, the City's online zoning map, lets you look up an address yourself.

When you book the free estimate, tell us what the lookup showed. We measure the opening and talk through the face of the door with that in mind.

The face and the mechanism are separate choices

How a door reads from the sidewalk and how it works behind the header are two different specifications. Panel layout, glazing, material, finish and hardware sit on the face. Spring balance, insulation, track type and the opener sit behind it, out of sight. Our replacement range covers both halves of that decision. For a Spanish or Mediterranean frontage the detailing is covered under Spanish and Mediterranean doors. Older hillside garages with little headroom are covered under low headroom and hillside.

Carriage-style doors on Craftsman houses

A carriage-style face tends to suit a Craftsman bungalow and the detached garage behind it. The panel layout carries the look, and a row of glazing across the top section brings daylight in. A stained wood face keeps the grain visible, while paint turns the door into a color decision against the siding. Browse new garage doors for what sits behind that face.

See it on the house first

Upload a photo of the frontage to see it on your house, pick a direction, and get a preview on your own elevation. It is a useful way to compare panel layouts on the building itself.

If the current door has to keep working

We repair springs, cables and track. If a torsion spring has snapped, or the door has come off its track, do not touch it and do not try to lift it. Keep people clear and call. The common faults are set out under garage door problems.

Working with us

Inspection and estimate are free, and neither is conditional on you going ahead. The written price holds with nothing added unless you say so, and the door we install is written on the invoice with its specification, face and mechanism both. You can ask about financing.
